Exploring the Role of EEGs in Psychiatry: A Paradigm Shift Towards Precision Medicine

At LG Counseling and Houston Brain Center, we are committed to staying at the forefront of innovative approaches in mental health treatment. Lorrianne Morrow, LPC-S, BCN, QEEG-DL, NASM-CPT, owner of LG Counseling and Houston Brain Center, was recently published as second author of a groundbreaking article titled "Evidentiary Significance of Routine EEG in Refractory Cases: A Paradigm Shift in Psychiatry." This article delves into the transformative potential of EEGs (electroencephalograms) in revolutionizing psychiatric care.

Over the past decade, traditional methods of prescribing psychiatric medications based solely on presenting symptoms have been increasingly questioned. The call for a paradigm shift towards precision medicine gained momentum, spearheaded by institutions like the National Institute of Mental Health and the World Psychiatric Association. This article contributes to the shift by providing compelling evidence for the integration of EEGs into psychiatric practice.

The study, conducted in collaboration with a large psychiatric practice, analyzed EEGs from 1,233 patients over several years. The findings identified four EEG biomarkers associated with medication failure in refractory patients: focal slowing, excessive beta spindling, encephalopathy, and isolated epileptiform discharges. These biomarkers signify underlying brain dysregulation, often overlooked by traditional psychiatric assessments, which may explain the failure of previous medication attempts.

What makes this research significant is its potential to pave the way for personalized medicine in psychiatry. By utilizing EEG biomarkers, clinicians can gain deeper insights into the neurophysiological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders, guiding more targeted and effective treatment approaches. As Lorrianne and the contributing authors of this article aptly put it, "testing the organ we are trying to treat" is a crucial step towards optimizing patient outcomes.

Lorrianne Morrow's expertise in neurotherapy and her extensive credentials as a board-certified Neurotherapist (BCIA), QEEG Diplomate, and NASM Certified Personal Trainer, underscores her commitment to holistic mental health care. At LG Counseling and Houston Brain Center, we believe in a comprehensive approach that addresses emotional, mental, physiological, psychosocial, and behavioral needs. Lorrianne specializes in combining Neurofeedback training with Mental Health treatment to enhance brain function and alleviate mood issues such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and ADHD.

Before establishing LG Counseling in 2009, Lorrianne gained valuable experience in various mental health settings, including private clinics and hospitals. Her academic background includes a B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Psychology and Sociology from Texas A&M University, and an M.A. Summa Cum Laude in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston Clear Lake. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychophysiology, Lorrianne remains dedicated to advancing the field of mental health through research and practice.

Lorrianne's research on EEGs in refractory psychiatric cases represents a significant advancement in the quest for precision medicine. By integrating EEG biomarkers into clinical practice, we can unlock new possibilities for understanding and treating complex psychiatric conditions. At LG Counseling and Houston Brain Center, we are proud to be at the forefront of this paradigm shift, empowering our clients to achieve optimal mental wellness through innovative approaches like Neurofeedback and personalized treatment plans.
